Brain Heart Infusion Agar (BHI Agar)
Use and description: Brain Heart Infusion Agar is recommended for the cultivation of a wide variety of fastidious microorganisms including Streptococci, Neisseria, yeasts and molds. The addition of antibiotics makes Brain Heart Infusion Agar selective for the growth of pathogenic fungi. This medium can be used for the selective isolation of Histoplasma capsulatum and Blastomyces with addition of 10% defibrinated blood, 0.05 mg cycloheximide and 0.5 mg choramphenicol per ml. The following supplements can be added to increase selectivity, penicillin (MMS06) (20 units/mL) and streptomycin (MMS07) (40 mcg/mL).

Final pH of the ready to use medium: 7.4 ± 0.2
Medium preparation: Add 52.0 grams of dehydrated culture medium to 1 liter of distilled water. Mix thoroughly. Gently heat and bring to the boiling. Autoclave for 15 min at 121oC. Pour into sterile Petri dishes or distribute into sterile tubes.
Quality specifications: Dehydrated medium: homogeneous, light beige, fine powder. Ready to use medium: clear and yellow beige.
Microbiological response:
Storage: Dehydrated medium should be stored between 10 to 25oC. Once opened, place the container in a dark, dry place. The dehydrated medium should not be used if there is any lump or the color has changed from the original.
